Urban Mining 2035

Recycling of Electronic-, Electric- Products and Products with valuable
Metal and Minerals from 2011 to 2015 and 2025 by years and views to 2030 and 2035 worldwide in Cities and total

Technologies, Developments, Markets, Laws, Regulations, Countries and Cities, Concepts, Competition and Chances and  Risks.

I. Initial Position

Worn-out and discarded electrical appliances
and electronic equipment are still mostly
disposed with household waste, hazardous
waste or exported to countries in Africa and
Asian, partly left in the sea. The recycling rate
is worldwide between 1 and 12 percent
depending on the country. Only in 2010 are 65
million tonnes of e-waste generated worldwide,
with a increase of 5 percent per year. We
know since a long-time that this is hazardous
waste. Today we know that this is not waste
anymore but very valuable raw material, like rare
earth, in the futures, energy savings, new jobs,
environmental protection and a billion $ business.
Beside of the classic recycling companies we expect that over 600 cities worldwide will enter this new business in the next 15 years. The races is on the recycling technologies and only 8 companies and 12 research institutes lead the developments today, but there are more in the future.

Recycling is possible and to make distribution, collecting and sorting is also possible today. More important in the future is that the producer of e-products are part of the value chain from the beginning of the design of products.
The value chain will be 1. product-design, 2. production, 3.usage, 4. licensing, 5. collecting, 6. sorting, 6. Treatment, 8. compounding, 9. processing and 10. sales of raw materials or retro distribution.

The German and Japanese government pushing with high speed the developments and want the communities to take there chances for new profit potentials and jobs.
( The subscriber of our newsletter “Urban Mining” receive more detailed market figures)

Looking at a company example Umicore recycling e-products and make 3 billion US $ a year with intelligent raw material recycling.

Materials separation at molecular level in the future...

Develop new materials separation processes. "In the industry, for example, high-performance materials are combined to make hybrid components. At some time in the future they will be available for recycling, but such high-performance materials require new separation and sorting techniques. In the years ahead it will not be possible in many cases to replace primary raw materials economically using conventional recycling and production processes.  In contrast to present methods the scientists want to separate the relevant raw materials, in particular those in short supply, at the production plant or in the first stage of processing, and to process them in just a few steps. "The separation processes should take place at the smallest required level, by way of molecular sorting.  The scientists are focusing on metals and materials flows from the mineral, biogenic, organic and silicate raw materials sectors.

What is “Urban Mining” ?

Urban Mining is a second way to treat e-waste in the future beside of classical recycler or with recycling companies together. This business is most rewarding and profitable in the future. It can bring new jobs in the cities and solve many problems. (For example 1 ton of cell phones contains over 300 g gold and 18 elements of rare earth materials can be recycled today too.)
The material recycling be done after refurbishing and use too.
The cities can understand the urban mining larger as for compounds and elements from products, buildings and waste. But the high profit will be in e-products.

These Informations are the result of 3 studies: Urban Mining 2035, Rare Earth Recycling 2035, Electronic and Electric Waste Recycling 2035 and Waste and harzardous Waste Worldwide 2035. All studies are new 2012. Also see http://www.hkc22.com/marketstudy.html  We made 8 feasibility studies for smaller and very big cities and consulting for several recycling companies worldwide. 1980 we made the first reecycling study for the chemical and automotive industry.

II. Goal of this Study

The study provides information about trends, opportunities and risks, and evaluates initial situation and further development as well, identifies and evaluates the growth and profit opportunities within the segments of technologies/markets and value chain.

It deals with e-products and compounds  worldwide based on data in 2010 and 2011 and its developments up to 2035. It contains in-depth analysis on
- markets, developments, current and future regulations
- technologies, the state of technologies today and in the future to expect
- applications,
- systems and products
- companies , future companies and cities
- 600 cities
- 57 countries with details on Germany, Japan, USA, china, Benelux, France, s-Korea, and more.

The study is arranged by sectors and can be obtained either completely, or each sector separately. The markets are presented by countries and regions, as well as by market segments like technologies and companies and so on.

The study provides an analysis and profiles, as well as presentation of the leading companies  that are working in this field or develop technologies  and their factors of success and technology portfolio. This part of the study can be obtained extra .

We offer a monthly newsletter “Urban Mining”, concepts and strategies for cities, the study and conferences in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Zurich, Hong Kong and Beijing. Please ask for dates.
